2016 Firefly Hike
On July 9, 2016, 70 people of all backgrounds, participated in the first Community Firefly Hike at Indian Lake County Park. We had participation from two African American Churches as well as from the community at large. One participant said that this was the most diversity that he’s seen in the outdoors.
The weather and the fireflies cooperated. Participants cooked s’mores over a fire, made a craft, and hiked to a field full of twinkling fireflies. P.J. Liesch, UW-Wisconsin’s Entomologist a.k.a. “The bug guy,” explained what makes fireflies light up. Nature set the backdrop for an evening of community building, learning, caring and fun. Off duty Madison police officers also participated in the fun. Let’s continue to build community using nature.
